How Some Sci-fi Movies Differ From the Books
Movies based on books have a reputation for being different from the book. Ranging from wildly skewed to slightly off. Some Sci-Fi novels are more difficult to translate to cinema than others. Sci-Fi is about more than the tech and the spaceships, it is also about social and moral issues. The discussion of these issues between characters which can go on for pages in a book can turn into boring talking heads on the screen. On the same coin everyone loves a great space battle.
As to exactly how a Sci-Fi movie can differ from its source material, it doesn-t take much. While many Science Fiction movies rake in many millions at the box office they don-t always rank as memorable with the fan base. This is perhaps because as we read a book we have a specific, or general, vision of what the characters are like, what the locals feel like and what the aliens/ creatures look like. When movie makers translate the material they have to make certain accommodations. How much will this cost? Does it fit the feel of the movie? So as to how the movie will differ from the source material it could be everything and anything but surely it will be something.
